Day 4 - Tuesday
01.04.2008
Woah! The early start was not nice, but after a shower and some breakfast 6am did not feel too bad! Dave was planning on getting to Alicante today – considering we were not even in Spain yet, this was going to be a long day!
Initially we aimed for Gau, which was on the French side of the Pyrenees. The drive was awesome – seeing the snow capped mountains. Driving through the mountains the scenery was awesome. There was up to a foot of snow in some places.
The road ahead of us disappeared into a tunnel, and after driving though it (must have been about 2km long) we popped out of the other side in Spain!
Sunny Spain was not…well, sunny. Lots of snow still, but it quickly disappeared and gave way to a very baron landscape. We had driven over 300km without a break, so pulled over in a desolate village after a big scare of running out of petrol. Dave was shattered, so co-pilot Sarah took over! Top-class driving may I add! She drove us to just outside Valencia, whilst Dave got some much needed shut eye. We could see the sea for the first time! The temperature had raised to 24 degrees – this was more like it!
Dave took over driving again as we started seeing signs for Alicante. He dropped us off at a service station just North of Alicante. It sad to say goodbye to be honest – he had driven us over 1050 miles!
We put on our hitch t-shirts again and started hitching again. My Spanish came rushing back to me which was a huge surprise. Within 45 minutes we met Tony! Top bloke who was a good laugh despite the language barrier. He even put on Rhianna, much to Shaun’s delight! Tony dropped us about 30km down the road at another service station.
We were considering bedding down for the night in a hotel (€180 a night – way out of our budget) but carried on trying to get one last lift for the day! Shortly after we met Juán the security guard. He took us a further 40km to a town called Murcia which was absolutely stunning. We met some other hitchers in the town as we were looking for accommodation. We found an awesome hostel for €14 each called ‘Pension Campoy’. A really nice clean and good value place. After eating at a nice local café and a walk around the town centre, we headed back to the room very tired indeed!
